Saving Money on Petrol

Petrol Savings Tips

Plan your appointments and errands all on the same day, park in a central location and walk to them all if possible. If grocery shopping is part of your day then park in the shopping centre carpark and use that as your central base to run your errands, as you will need the shortest walk possible when loaded down with groceries.

Walk or ride a bicycle whenever possible. It will also benefit your children and your health if you walk them to and from school whenever possible.

When driving, take off slowly from a stop and brake as slowly as possible and still be safe. Drive 5 – 10km/h below the limit whenever possible (do consider other drivers behind you however and move over to allow them to overtake). You will get there nearly as quickly and use considerably less petrol.

Try not to use airconditioning or heating; wind the windows up and remove roof racks to reduce air drag. Empty the boot and inside of the car of all possible items to reduce the weight of the car.

Ask yourself, "Do I REALLY need to go there? Is there a place within walking distance that will have what I want?" Even if it is a few cents dearer at a nearby corner shop, it might be cheaper than driving to a supermarket.

If you have two or more vehicles, use the most fuel efficient vehicle the most.

Replace your fuel filter and service and tune your car. Check your muffler for leaks.

Consider purchasing a bicycle or even a powered scooter. Consider installing LPG in your vehicle.

Fill your vehicle at night or in the early morning with fuel, as heat causes the volume of petrol to expand. If you fill your car during the cooler hours, you will get more actual petrol for your dollar as the volume will be less.
While filling up your car with petrol, check your tyre pressure. If your tyres are underinflated you will burn more petrol.

Consider upgrading to premium fuel. It costs a few cents more but the fuel economy is greater and you generally end up in front.

Use grocery docket vouchers whenever possible. Some companies also use fuel vouchers as an incentive, such as credit card companies.

Shop online whenever possible and have items mailed to your door.

Have a master list of all the consumable items in your pantry and laundry cupboard, and ensure you refer to it when writing your shopping list, to prevent multiple drives to the supermarket.
